PROEXPOSURE Photography Training @ Hargeysa International Book Fair 2013

The phenomenal rise of the digital camera and the popularity of the computer has profoundly shaped and transformed the art of photography in the last 10 years. This year Hargeysa International Book Fair has introduced a new two-day introductory photography training session prior to the opening of the book fair. Our guest photographer, Kate Stanworth, who is presenting an exhibition of photographs from the 2012 Somaliland local elections, will teach 8-12 prospective photographers. Kate works in association with PROEXPOSURE, an organisation that trains photographers across the world. Her sessions will encourage trainees to consider the potential uses of photography, to practice basic techniques to enhance their photographic skills, and to appreciate and evaluate the use of photography in news reporting, investigative journalism and storytelling. The course consists of the following modules:

Discussion: What makes a good photo?
Presentation: How to take better photos
Practical exercise – taking good portraits (taking photos of each other)
Feedback and assignment.

The candidates will be selected amongst those who have responded to the ‘call for participation’. Because of the limited places, we will employ a first-come first-serve policy. All students must have access to a digital camera, which they should bring to the session. It is however expected that the trainees are local young journalists, designers or photographers who have already shown interest in the subject and need to further enhance their skills. The trainees will also have the opportunity to use the skills they have gained by volunteering as official photographers of the Book Fair.
Kate Stanworth is a London-based photographer specialising in documentary and portrait photography. In November 2012 she travelled to Somaliland to document the local council elections. She has worked on documentary projects in Europe, South America and Africa.

For those who are interested to join the programme as trainees, please send an email to courses@redsea-online.com and cc to info@hargeysabookfair.com with your details: Name, Date and place of birth, Telephone number to contact you. The deadline for applications is the 1/8/2013
